In the world of jazz, commodities are fleeting. Styles come and go. Artists at the top of this week’s charts could be history by the end of next month. Words like “staying power” and “longevity” are for anyone or anything that sticks around for more than a couple years.
But then there are those rare few, gifted with the right stuff, who hang in for the long haul – musical collectives that continue to explore and evolve album after album, year after year, decade after decade, eschewing fashion and fad and reaching instead for something much more permanent. This is the story of Pieces of a Dream, a contemporary jazz band that celebrates its 30 th anniversary with the February 2006 release of Pillow Talk, their fourth album on Heads Up.

Pieces of a Dream emerged out of Philadelphia’s music scene in 1976. Keyboardist James Lloyd, drummer Curtis Harmon and former bassist Cedric Napoleon, were (and still are) managed by the drummer’s father and uncle, Danny and Bill Harmon, respectively. The group based their name on “Pieces of Dreams,” a cover tune by Stanley Turrentine that the group performed.
Pieces of a Dream first started playing throughout the Tri-State area, and were soon featured on Temple University’s pioneering jazz radio station, WRTI-FM. Long before the “Young Lions” era of Wynton Marsalis, Lloyd and Harmon were swinging so hard as teenagers that the great Count Basie once proclaimed them “a tough act to follow.”
But it was another jazz legend, the late Grover Washington Jr., the sax man who made Philadelphia his home, who helped Pieces of a Dream become the internationally known stars they are today.

After quickly becoming popular around Philadelphia, the trio landed a spot as the house band for a local television show called City Lights. Their experience widened as they played backup on the broadcasts to a wide variety of artists, and that’s where Washington first heard them. One day while the teenagers were playing at the Bijou (where Grover had recorded his Live at the Bijou album), he sat in with them to play “Mr. Magic.”
Soon Washington announced that he was starting a production company and that Pieces of a Dream would be his first act. Lloyd was only a senior in high school when his first record was released.

“That felt awesome,” recalls Lloyd. “Not just having an album out, but going all over the world touring and performing with Grover.”

From 1981 to 1984, Pieces of a Dream built their reputation with three albums on Elektra that would come to define the musical essence of the smooth jazz radio explosion: Pieces of a Dream, We Are One and Imagine This. Those seminal records yielded some of their earliest hits, including “Warm Weather,” “Mount Airy Groove” and “Fo Fi Fo.”

Soon after completing Joyride, their last effort for Elektra, Pieces of a Dream moved to EMI/Blue Note and went on to record seven more albums. During this period, the group amicably parted ways with long time friend Cedric Napoleon.

In 2001, Pieces of a Dream signed with Heads Up International and celebrated their 25th anniversary with what was undoubtedly their best album in years, Acquainted with the Night. The group’s silver anniversary release featured guitarist Ronny Jordan, vocalist Maysa Leak, and saxophonists Gerald Albright and Kenny Blake. Highlights included compositions from Albright and Michael Bearden, along with remakes of “Mahogany” and “Upside Down.” Acquainted with the Night generated two top-five singles on R&R's NAC chart. The follow up album Love's Silhouette also scored top radio chart positioning and Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart top 10 status. Their April 2004 release, No Assembly Required, proved to be another hit album in their long and illustrious career.

The youthful exuberance of those two Philly kids from the mid-‘70s is still very much alive in Pillow Talk, Pieces of a Dream’s latest effort on Heads Up. The twelve-song set marks the thirty-year milestone in an ongoing journey that has taken the band to countless corners of the jazz landscape. Here as elsewhere, the mix of styles and sensibilities – jazz, R&B, funk, hip-hop, house and more – sets a high standard for others in the contemporary jazz scene to follow.
It’s that kind of innovation and eclecticism that keeps Pieces of a Dream fresh and authentic in a jazz world that’s ever-changing. “We will always be true to ourselves and our roots,” says Lloyd, “and at the same time try to stay in touch with the times.”

JOHNSON CITY -- After months of renovating, decorating and securing the necessary permits, Joseph Roma Jr.'s The New Arlington is about to take off as the area's newest venue for jazz and live music.

The storefront nightclub is at Main and Arch streets. It's taken the 51-year-old Whitney Point man nearly a year to open the club.
"It's really going to be more than just jazz," he said. "It's going to be good music, more like an 'unplugged' music format where people come to hear good music, talk and enjoy yourself."
And he plans to draw on the talents of local musicians and singers.
"Already," he said, "there is buzz around town about the place."
The long, narrow room, which has a neon sign in the front window, features a small center stage, complete with theatrical lighting and a sound system. The new nightclub is the latest incarnation of Joe's Drum Shop, which Roma closed last year.
Looking about the room, Roma said his club can accommodate about 80 people, either seated at the 17 cafe tables or at the bar. He plans to have beer, wine, desserts and coffee for his music lovers.
Posters of musicians like John Coltrane, Pat Metheny and Tony Bennett hang next to Joni Mitchell and Luciano Pavarotti. There's even an autographed picture of Duke Ellington from when the jazz great appeared in Owego in the 1970s.
"These are all the artists and the music I like," Roma said.
The New Arlington joins Curley's Coffee House at 252 Main St., which offers live music throughout the week, and SOZO at 261 Main St., a Christian-based coffeehouse that also features live music.
"It will be great to have a place with live jazz as a regular venue, especially if it felt like a jazz joint," said longtime jazz aficionado Jeffery K. Davis of the Town of Binghamton. For him, visiting the new club is a priority.
"At one time in the 1980s, there was quite a bit of jazz here," Davis said. Establishments included clubs like Tawni's and Bourbon Street in Binghamton, and the Music Box in Johnson City.
But, he added, "it's a tough business. It has been a long time since the area had any real jazz clubs."
Veteran musician Donald Godfrey of Binghamton said he, too, will check out the new club. "There's really no place here to hear good jazz," he said.
Roma plans to be open from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays with a $3 cover charge.
"I want to feature local talent," he said, as well as his own band, which consists of Roma on drums, Gene Cothran of Union on piano and Andrew Williams of Owego on upright bass.
"We'll invite singers to come in, and at the end of the night we'll have an open jam when anyone can come who wants to play," Roma said. "It's really going to be fun."
